Oral surgical care when you need it

Dr. Palmer is experienced in performing a wide range of oral surgeries to restore oral health and wellness. Some of the most common oral surgeries we perform at Acadia Family Dentistry include:

  • Wisdom teeth removal: Most people’s wisdom teeth start growing in when they reach their late teens or early 20s. If there is insufficient space in your mouth for these teeth to grow in, they can cause crowding of your other teeth or even fail to erupt (called “impacted” wisdom teeth), causing issues such as pain and inflammation beneath the surface. When this happens, wisdom teeth extractions are often recommended.
  • Tooth extractions: Decay and injury can lead to severe damage in teeth. At Acadia family dentistry, we offer you a number of solutions to save damaged teeth, but in some cases, the damage is too significant to repair and the best option is to extract the tooth.

What is oral sedation and its benefits?

Here at the dental office, Dr. Jared Palmer offers oral sedation as one of the available sedation methods and utilizes pills or liquid medication.

The desired result is a relaxed and pleasant experience with little memory of the dental procedure.

Having oral sedation allows multiple procedures to be performed efficiently in one appointment.

Anxiety and pain are safely eliminated.

What can you expect with oral sedation?

With oral sedation dentistry, unlike general anesthesia, you will take medication before the dental procedure, and upon arrival, your level of sedation will be assessed.

Treatment will begin once adequate sedation is achieved. You will be very sleepy and relaxed.

Oral sedation allows patients to be responsive and verbalize their needs.

The sedatives are amnesic. Therefore, you will have little or no memory of the experience.

We will monitor your vital signs continuously for your safety. You must have a driver to and from this appointment and plan on resting for the rest of the day.

Are there any risks of using oral sedation?

If the safe oral sedation dosage is inadequate, the procedure may be postponed, or your treatment may be performed with less sedation than desired.

A risk is the possibility of unusual reactions to the sedative drugs, such as altered mental state, physical reactions, allergic reactions, and other conditions that may require emergency medical attention.

Inability to discuss treatment options with the doctor, should unusual circumstances occur, requires a change in the treatment plan.

Who is the ideal candidate?

With Dr. Jared Palmer at Acadia Family Dentistry, anyone who has fears and anxiety about doing treatments may be a candidate.

Anyone who wants to get a significant amount of dental work done in one visit is also a candidate.

Patients with a strong gag reflex or who have put off dental care for years because of dental anxiety or certain medical conditions may be a candidate here at Dr. Jared Palmer’s.

  • Dental implants: If you have had a tooth extracted or are missing one or more teeth, dental implants are a terrific option for replacing your lost teeth and restoring the function and appearance of your smile.
  • Periodontal surgery: Even though gum disease is incredibly common, it can be very detrimental to your health – periodontal disease can not only lead to oral health issues such as gum recession, tooth loss, and bone loss, but is also linked to serious health issues such as heart attacks and strokes. If gum disease is left untreated, periodontal surgery might be necessary to restore the shape and health of your gums, ligaments, and bone.

At Acadia Family Dentistry, we know that when you need emergency oral surgery, your life can stop in its tracks. That’s why we make every attempt to fit you into our schedule as soon as possible when a dental emergency strikes. During all oral surgeries, we use effective anesthetics to keep you pain-free and offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to help you stay calm and relaxed throughout your treatment.
